UNIT OF INQUIRY - ADAPTATION
We have just completed our first unit of inquiry for the new school year - Adaptation. Our central idea was 'Over time, living things need to adapt to survive.'
Our lines of Inquiry are:
The concept of adaptation
Circumstance that led to adaptation
How living things adapt or respond to environmental conditions
Key Concepts are: Reflection and Change
Related Concepts are: Adaptation and Evolution
Our focus specialist area for this unit was ICT. The summative assessment task challenge was to design a new animal species. Our created species had to be properly labeled and we had to provide reasons why a particular body part was important to that species. We had to use paint brush or the drawing pad application to focus on the following aspects: habitat, diet and physical changes. We needed to think about different adaptations from the animal kingdom, design our own species and label the adaptations our species had. Questions we had to consider included:
- is it going to be a predator or a species that is preyed upon? (will it hunt or hide?)
- is it going to be camouflaged or brightly coloured?
- where will it live? (arctic, desert, ocean etc.)
- how will it move? (will it swim, run or fly?)
- will it live with other members of the same species?
- how will it keep warm/cool?
- how big will it be?
